Narrative(s)

This building does not retain sufficient integrity to be individually eligible for its historic entertainment associations. As a good commercial building downtown, it might contribute to a commercial historic district.A livery occupied this site prior to the Palace Theater's construction in 1915. It appears on the 1921 Sanborn map with the notation, "Moving Pictures & Occasional Vaudeville." A 1932 fire destroyed the interior of the theater and it was rebuilt with a Spanish motif. The theater closed in 1972 and the building subsequently contained a bakery and a game arcade before again being gutted by fire. From 1994 to 1997 Hummel's Total Workout fitness gym occupied the building. The Area Community Theater Inc., a non-profit, took control in 1997 and remodeled the building to its current appearance.
